Robben announces Netherlands retirement

Arjen Robben took the resulting spot kick and almost messed up the Panenka finish as the ball dribbled over the line past the outstrecthed boot of goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

Netherlands captain Arjen Robben has announced his retirement from international football after the side missed out on qualification for the 2018 World Cup on Tuesday night.

For first time in a friendly match against Portuguese national team in 2003, Robben played national championship, three times World Cup tournament, and 3 times in European Cup tournament.

Sweden secured a spot in the UEFA World Cup qualifying playoffs despite losing 2-0 to Netherlands, whose elimination was confirmed.

Robben was at the centre of things again 10 minutes later, with his shot from distance deflecting into the path of Georginio Wijnaldum, who inexplicably failed to find the next from 10 yards. The Netherlands failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 2002.

They finished with a tally of +17, eight goals better off than the Dutch who had to win by a seven-goal margin to overturn the deficit.

They were mostly wasteful, but Robben - by far the best player on the pitch - showed his class with a stunning second just before the break to at least provide a little extra belief.

Victor Lindelof gave away a penalty in Sweden's defeat to Netherlands.

"Normally it would be beautiful, but it is tough not to go to the World Cup", Robben said, as he ended a career that had many high points on a low.

The Dutch, however, lacked the necessary creativity as Sweden shut up shop in the second half and the match fizzled out, leaving the Netherlands in third place.
