"Honestly, a lot of people were saying it was going to be him", a student, who did not provide his name, told WJXT-TV. Jim Gard, a math teacher who said Cruz had been in his class last year, said he believes the school had sent out an email warning teachers that Cruz shouldn't be allowed on campus with a backpack.

The 15-year-old survived and recovered over the course of a few weeks.

Two students, a boy and a girl, passed away and 17 other students were badly injured. Five are suffering from "life-threatening injuries", police said.

The suspect, identified as Nicolas Cruz, has been taken into custody. He was armed with a single AR-15 style assault rifle and was carrying "countless magazines, multiple magazines", Israel said. The sheriff said he was expelled for unspecified disciplinary reasons.

Actress Reese Witherspoon said she was "heartbroken" by the attack, adding "enough is enough".

Officials are examining Cruz's digital profile, which contained what Israel described as "very, very disturbing" content.

"We're just being there, supporting", Friedman said.

Most of the fatalities were inside the building, though some victims were found outside.

"I saw some bodies".

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said "a football coach" had died in the shooting.

Social media was filled with condolences after Feis' death and many hailed him a hero.
